Fugitives steal the win
July 8th, 2007What a disappointment, after 3 weeks and 1 holiday of no cricket for anyone confidence was high that we could carry on where we left off against Whitchurch before the enforced break due to the monsoon like conditions that have hit South Wales recently!
Things got off to an indifferent start when Gareth Raymond sent me a text at 12:45, enroute to the ground, informing me that he would not be able to play as his kit was in the boot of his car and his keys were with Gavin Gump! He did, however play, although he turned up 5 minutes late and in Simone's trousers, Nipper's trainers and Carl Gump's shirt!!
The skipper won his first toss of the season (despite calling tails) and invited Fugies to bat first on a dampish looking wicket
On the field Fugies got off to a decent start with Thomas and Sergent putting on 58 for the first wicket before the skipper did Thomas in the flight and bowled him for 41, Sergent followed in the skipper's next over with the score on 59 and the 'wood were well in it. Dr Rowe making his first second team appearance of the season dropped Roy Emmott when he had not got going and that proved crucial as he ended up unbeaten on 56 and anchored the Fugitives innings well.
The vice-captain Gameson dislocated his finger stopping yet another skipper full toss and bravely fielded the rest of the innings one handed after Martin Ebdon refused to sub for Scott despite being of similar build!
Fugitives ended up on 182-7 and given that only Carl Gump and Gareth Raymond were regular bowlers was an excellent bowling and fielding display. The pick of the Blackwood bowlers was myself with superb figures (again) of 10 - 2 - 27 - 3.
A very disappointing batting display followed with only Simone Davies (58) and Billy "The Kaiser" Ford (13no) getting into double figures and after being 86-2 at one stage and going along comfortably ended up being bowled out for 129 in only 32 overs.
It was more down to bad batting and indifferent shot selection than particularly good bowling and we have to improve 150% if we are to get anything out of next weeks match against Pentyrch. Hopefully the weather will improve and we can get back into the kind of form we showed before the rain break.
Down but not out
